The way farming has changed over the years has taken its toll on farmers. Imagine working long hours, in all weather, all year round, only to get little or no return for everything you produce. Farmers are too often under pressure and a lot of stress.
We’ve been working with our partners at Grassroots Farming since the start of our Honest Farming initiative. Now we are supporting 6 farming families by paying a premium for every kilo of beef we buy. They are supporting our mass balance and working with Grassroots who help them to farm regeneratively.
This means that regenerative farmers aren’t economically disadvantaged by maintaining their methods and can ensure that more sustainably farmed beef enters the supply chain. Honest is the first restaurant brand to support [GrassRoots] Farming’s ambition to support more farmers help more people access more sustainable beef.
Marc’s rapid progression from monoculture grasses has helped build soil carbon stocks by 9.45 tonnes per hectare in the past two years alone, independent audits have shown. Being part of a sustainable supply chain where Marc is paid a premium has improved system simplicity which is allowing Marc to spend more family time with his wife, Anna, and their two children, Gethin, 10 and, Oli, 6.
Joe delivers lectures to students in agriculture at Nottingham University, spreading the learnings from practicing regenerative agriculture. His cattle consumes a diversity of plants in the multi-species leys, which require no inorganic fertiliser. Regenerative farming improvements has already made positive changes in his carbon and biodiversity audits.
Ian is learning the art of farming again and says it’s a far more enjoyable way of doing it, Ian won the industry’s prestigious Farmers Weekly’s Beef Farmer of the Year (2023). Ian’s cattle can be more selective when grazing herbal leys. Some days they eat chicory and other days they will leave that. If their body is telling them they need a certain type of nutrient they can find it. With grass, they only had one choice.
Graham was named Grassland Farmer of the Year by the British Grassland Society in 2023. Graham understands the potential of regenerative farming practices and has led Graham to adopt rotational grazing across the farm. Often grazing groups of 180 animals together to get maximum impact on the system.
Ed's farm is in the beautiful rolling hills of Berkshire. He's one of the first suppliers to get involved with Honest Farming and his beef is absolutely delicious. He farms a cracking Turkey as well. Gobble gobble.
