Honest's Regenerative Farming Project

With a name like Honest we’ve got a lot to live up to. It hasn’t escaped us that there has been a growing focus on the environmental impact of beef. We could be carbon offsetting to make us feel better, but that felt like kicking the can down the road.  

Since 2022 we have been directly supporting regenerative farmers. It’s a more progressive approach to farming that’s focused on working with nature instead of against it, helping to regenerate biodiversity and boost soil health. Better soil health equals more CO2 being locked in.  

We’re currently supporting 6 farming families who are getting paid a premium so that their farms are commercially viable while maintaining strict regenerative agricultural practices . The benefits of this approach include better soil health, biodiversity in plants, farming with nature, increasing wildlife species and more. 

The farms we support use less than 50% carbon per kg of beef than standard UK beef, and this isn’t taking into account any carbon sequestered. This is purely from less diesel for vehicles, less chemical pesticides and less factory made animal feeds. Our cattle spend more time living off the land, doing what they do best. 

Nature works on a different timeframe to us, a couple of years is a blink of an eye so we’ll have to wait a little longer to get more data on carbon sequestration.

Honest Burgers is a founding member of a new community of businesses set up by our partners, Grassroots, to bring their combined purchasing power together to support system change amongst farmers. They help us translate our procurement volume towards a direct investment into the adoption of climate smart agriculture amongst farmers. This simply means that we pay a premium for all the beef we purchase, which is paid to farmers to support and reward their regenerative transition, and to increase the amount of regeneratively farmed beef in the supply chain. 

Every Honest burger you buy puts more regenerative beef back in our fields. It’s that simple.
